You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last.

Even the most magnificent specimen of tree eventually dies and decays, but the fruit and seeds that it has borne during its lifetime have lasting importance as they become the visible legacy of that tree. A healthy tree leaves vibrant progeny.

But Jesus tells us that those who are in Him have the opportunity to leave a unique and eternal spiritual legacy, namely the fruit of the Spirit that has grown in us during our earthly lives, through our obedience to Jesus.

In fact, Jesus tells us in this verse that it is the very reason for which He has chosen us, that we might be fruit-bearers, releasing a demonstration and a legacy of His character in this troubled world. What an amazing privilege!

PRAYER: Father, today I offer afresh my whole being to be a fruit-bearer for You, through the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. How wonderful to know that this can be fruit that will truly have a lasting significance! Amen.
