And they took it.
The story of the wedding feast at Cana is well known to many of us. The gospel of John records, ‘What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him’ (John 2:11).
As I read the account again in John 2, one sentence stood out to me, which I hadn’t really noticed before. Jesus tells the servants to fill six stone waterpots, and they fill them up to the brim with water. Jesus then tells them to draw some of it out to take to the master of the feast. But it was the next sentence in the story that caught my attention: ‘And they took it’.
No questions, no arguments, no “What on earth are you doing asking me to take water to the master of ceremonies. Don’t you know he could have me sold into slavery, or even worse, have me thrown into prison for giving him water?” It made me think of all the times I’ve been asked to do something, and I’ve questioned or complained or moaned that it was a stupid thing to do.
Why do I find it so hard to take the simple ‘water’ that Jesus is asking me to take and allow him to turn it into ‘wine’ – into the things He has planned and purposed? How often do I miss out on experiencing the miracle because logic and caution have replaced the adventure of faith and obedience?
