• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Scripture Union Daily Guide Devotional 11 October 2021 Message
Read vs.13-17 again. Why would people pray earnestly but would not believe when their prayer is answered? How often do we too do the same? The reaction of the early Christians to the release of Peter shows that on many occasions while we are praying, especially about cases that we consider hopeless, we often entertain some doubts. James rightly warned against doubting when we pray (James. 1:6-8).
Despite our doubts, however, God still goes ahead to answer our prayers, just because of His love and mercy. Meanwhile, picture the state of the soldiers who were keeping watch over Peter. We pity the way they found their death, mere victims of autocratic and wicked rulers (vs.18-19). But wicked Herod himself was struck dead by an angel of God (vs.21-23).
Why did the angel of the Lord strike Herod in vs. 22 – 23a? In vivid contrast however, “the word of God continued to increase and spread” (v.24). This is a reminder and encouragement to us that earthly tyrants will come and go, but their cruelty, hatred and persecution will remain powerless to arrest the onward progress of the cause of Christ and His church. Our God has the final say.
Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Thank God because He has the final say.
Thank God for His love which He has demonstrated in diverse ways of salvation, health, provisions, safety, etc.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Matthew 11:28-30; Song of Sol. 4-5; Eph. 1
