Topic: Assyria’s Downfall; A warning To Egypt

Opening Prayer: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Ezekiel 31:1-18

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Pharaoh regarded himself powerful, well-guarded and invincible? Observe however, how God uses the example of Assyria’s fall to teach him and his armies a lesson in humility (v.18)! Assyria was an immense empire – beyond comparison (v.8), highly exalted, surpassing all nations and spreading in breadth, conquering territories (vs.5-6) – that could be compared to the cedar of Lebanon. The cedar tree is a sign of strength, elevation and durability. Assyria considered herself as superior to them all. Compare this with what Paul says in Romans 12:3.

Though great and vast, Assyria was conquered by Babylon. How much more Egypt which was not as great as Assyria! Note how the Lord taught Egypt that He can establish a great nation then bring it down in judgment. This is what will happen to the proud and arrogant and those who put their trust in the world and its power! Do you remember the Titanic, whose builders boasted that even God cannot sink it (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Titanic)?
