Scripture Union Daily Guide 18 December 2021
Topic: Battered Faith
Opening Prayer: Open my eyes O Lord that I might behold wondrous things from your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Psalm 9:11-20
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any prayer for me to remember?
Outline: David calls on others to join in praising this God who has done all these wonderful works for them (v.11). Why (v.12; compare Psalm 89:14)? Perhaps, you have been badly hurt and may want to fight back. See Romans 12:19 and note what should be the correct response to situations like this? It may be difficult for us to love and pray for those who hurt us. Ask the Lord for grace since that is His will for us. God is in the best position to handle our situation. He knows the punishment that is most appropriate for any offence.
See how this plays out in vs.15-16, the way God judges wickedness. Vs.13&14 highlight the present adversity which may seem to muffle the voice of praise, but the certainty remains that God will act. Have you proved this in your life? “Trust on, trust on believer”. Note the warning in v.17 and the good news in v. 18. The Psalm closes with the standpoint that there may be constant need for prayer and perseverance, trusting God always.
