Opening Prayer: Sanctify my life dear Lord as I study your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Proverbs 31:1-9

• Is there any command for me to obey?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
The godly parentage of the author of this proverb (Lemuel – ‘Belonging to God’) is obvious (vs.1,2 &3b). Thus, the loving, caring, and godly instructions given by the mother are like prophetic utterances (v.1) that should not be neglected, for they hold the key to the future (Proverbs 1:8,9; 6:20-24). V.3 is both a command and warning, to steer clear of every inclination to immoral practices. The perils of diverse sexual perversions are horribly ruinous.
The only wise thing to do with immoral appeals is ‘FLEE’ – 1 Corinthians.6:18; Proverbs 5:1-14. Wine as an alcoholic drink, has as much a deceptive appeal, as an immoral woman, and both have ruined some very promising lives and careers – Proverbs 20:1; 23:20,21. Note some reasons for avoiding alcohol (vs.4,5). The statement in vs.5&6 is sarcastic. Those who think they can escape their misery by soaking themselves in intoxicating drinks are self-deluded.
When their eyes are cleared, they quickly realise that nothing has changed. See also Habakkuk 2:15. Vs.8&9 is a call for us to use whatever privileged position we occupy in society, to advocate for the welfare and justice of the less privileged.
