MFM Daily Devotional 6 November 2024 Message
The Fire Scripture today introduces us to a story about a family that left their land in Bethlehem because of famine to move to another land in Moab. The primary reason why they left Bethlehem for Moab was not because God instructed them to move but because they felt they would have food to survive in the new place they moved to.
Famine is a reality that we cannot shy away from; it has been part of human experience since the days of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It happened during the days of King David and it also happened in the days of the Apostles of Jesus. In Mathew 24, Jesus mentioned famine as one of the signs of the end time. This makes famine a challenge that every human being must find a practical way to deal with.

This is what made the man Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, decide to leave Bethlehem i.e. the house of bread to move to a land that God has instructed the Israelites not to have anything to do with. The pressure for survival and the need to help his family out of a challenging situation made him make a drastic decision that later caused him pain and agony later on in life.
This is the situation so many Christians have found themselves today. The economic situation of the country has made many take drastic decisions to leave the house of Bread i.e. the house of God to go to a foreign land in a bid to find a means of survival. The question we must ask is what is God’s formula for dealing with famine?
The Bible gave us an insight into this question in Genesis 26 when Isaac was about to leave Gerar and move down to Egypt because of famine. God appeared to him and instructed him to stay in the land of Gerar and sow in the same land. The primary solution to the problem of famine is not just moving from one place to another; it is listening to divine instruction and strictly obeying God’s counsel.
Beloved, God’s resources cover times of abundance and times of famine. The challenge is for us to stay where He has sent our divine allocations. Elimelech lost his life and his two sons because of his decision to go to a place God had not endorsed for him to live. The irony of the situation lies in the fact that God had visited the place he left i.e. Bethlehem and good times was restored to the place.
