TOPIC:  Lessons From The Life of Elisha

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Judges 6:1-40, Luke 22:54-23:12, Psalm 95:1-96:13, Pro 14:5-6

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 2:11-14
11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

MEMORY VERSE
So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother good-bye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” “Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?” So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his attendant.

1 Kings 19:19-21

MFM Daily Devotional 26 April 2025 Message

Elisha was a wealthy farmer. He was so busy ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen when Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

Elisha lived at a time when moral and spiritual decadence was high in Israel; a time when idol worship was “trending” in Israel but he did not compromise his faith. He refused to be swept away by trends, but remained true to God.

God sees and knows all, even our hearts. He saw Elisha, who remained true and served Him diligently, even in the midst of sin and idolatry, and elevated him.

This lesson applies to all Christians of today; the trending thing is not necessarily the God thing. Even if it is trending in the church, remain true to God. Don’t compromise your faith, and He who sees in secret will Himself openly reward you.

Elisha accepted the call in a heartbeat; he left the oxen, ran after Elijah and became his servant. Elisha was purposeful and visionary.

He knew exactly what he wanted out of his relationship with Elijah: a double portion of the prophet’s anointing. His goal was clearly defined without ambiguity and he got the answer. You must be sure of what you want out of life, or are you the kind of person that takes anything that comes your way?

If you do not or cannot clearly define what you want out of life and your purpose and goals, you will jump on every bandwagon that comes around, which will ultimately lead to a life of frustration and non-achievement.

Elisha was a very determined and focused man. Despite efforts to distract him from his aim, he remained focused. He must have said to himself, “It’s either this double portion or nothing else.”

Determination and focus are vital traits of highly successful people. Without these, nothing worthwhile can be accomplished in life, because there certainly will be distractions and challenges to stop you from reaching your goals.
