The issue of parental favouritism is a thorny one that must be dealt with in the Christian family because it usually aggravates sibling rivalry, which can cause trauma to parents. Jacob, Jesse, Isaac and Rebekah are examples of parents in the Bible who were guilty of favouritism to their own detriment.

Isaac and Rebekah were united in love (Genesis 24:67) but were opposites in their love for their children. The opposing characters of Esau and Jacob should have united them in praying for God’s will in their lives. Jacob, who should have learnt a lesson from how his mother’s favouritism nearly cost him his life, fared even worse. His favouritism towards one son led to the legendary jealousy of his brothers that led to their wanting him dead.

As a mother, are you guilty of openly or subtly creating hostility among your children? You should pray for each child’s success according to the unique talents and character traits that God has given them. Never ask your child why they cannot be like their sibling. Even Siamese Twins have different character traits.

For example, teach your children to settle their differences amicably among themselves, through love, mutual respect and a forgiving spirit. Teaching them to support one another will diminish rivalry among them.

More importantly, remind God all the time of His promise in Isaiah 54:13 (All your children shall be taught by the Lord and great shall be the peace of your children).

Finally, follow the example of our Lord Jesus Christ, who cares for all of us His own equally, whether Jew or Gentile (Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11).
