2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

MFM Daily Devotional 19 November 2024 Message
The Fire Scripture for today reveals the story of a man who found himself favoured in a foreign country as a privileged captive. The name of the man is Nehemiah; he was a Jew by birth but was taken away to another country as a captive due to the sin of his people and nation.
He was very fortunate to become a cupbearer to the king of the country that took them captive. After some time, the nation that took them as captives allowed those who wanted to return to their country to return. The unfortunate development was that back home the wall of the city and the gates had been destroyed. Most of the buildings had been burnt down and those who returned home were living in terrible and vulnerable conditions.

Amid this comfort, he still had the time to ask for the condition of his people in Jerusalem and the response to the answer he got was amazing. Nehemiah did not just sympathise with the plight and predicament of his people; he was indeed touched by the feelings of their infirmities.
He wept and mourned for days and later entered into a season of fasting and praying not for himself but for his people who are living in danger and abject poverty. He empathized with them and practically played a substitution role in a bid to do something tangible to change the condition of his people.
Beloved, we are supposed to emulate the example Nehemiah displayed and not just join people to talk about the problem of our nation, We must go further to mourn, pray and fast for the redemption and the salvation of our land regardless of where we live and who we are.
These spiritual steps should come before the physical rebuilding of the broken walls of different strata and areas of our society. Patriotism and true empathy towards our nation are godly virtues that heaven rewards.
