MFM Daily Devotional 18 January 2025 Message
There is a popular story in the Bible about how King David committed adultery with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. Uriah, a Hittite, became one of the trusted soldiers of the army of Israel. He was in the battle-front fighting against the enemies of the land, the Ammonites, while the king defiled his wife back home.
Unknown to Uriah, the strange summons by the King was to set him up as if he was the one responsible for the wife’s pregnancy. As such, the king would have succeeded in covering his sin of adultery with Bathsheba.
King David asked that Uriah be made drunk so much that he would not be in his right senses while he went in to sleep with his wife. But to the amazement of the king, even being drunk with wine could not downplay the loyalty of Uriah to him (the king) and the nation of Israel. Uriah slept at the door of his house. This action infuriated the king! He sought a more dangerous and decisive strategy for eliminating Uriah. A letter was given to Uriah to be handed over to Joab, the captain of the army.

Little did Uriah know that he carried his death warrant to the chief executor. This man was obedient unto death! He couldn’t lay aside the armour for a few minutes of pleasure. He was so committed to the victory that awaited Israel that being with his wife appeared a momentary and temporary pleasure that could wait till he got back home from the war. The victory of the nation Israel was paramount in his heart The love for his wife came second! What a patriotic spirit and a devoted soldier of Israel.
Joab, in obedience to the king, positioned Uriah at the hottest spot on the battlefront. The man was killed by the enemies’ bullets. Uriah died the death of the champion! He won the battle over sin and disloyalty. He remained a principled man till death. He was more considerate of others in the battle-front.
Uriah passed the test of loyalty to the king, leadership and constituted authority. He passed the test of patriotism. He passed the test or self-centredness. He passed the test of misplacement of priorities. Beloved, How will you fare if you are faced with these tests?
