Meekness means kindness and patience in suffering injuries without feeling a spirit of revenge. Meekness is humility and it is one of the attributes of Jesus. As a child of God, you are to operate in this fruit of the Spirit called meekness. Meekness is a mark of true discipleship. Meekness is the spirit of being teachable and being yielded in your relationship with God first and with the people.
It is an important part of true love and manifests in being patient, kind and not rude. In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He said, “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5). The kingdom of God is at hand which is different from the earthly kingdom where wealth, power or position are the order of the day because this is what the people of the world seek after, but all these are not important in the kingdom of God.
Are your attitudes the same with the world’s selfishness, pride, lust for power or does your attitude reflect humility and self-sacrifice? Only the meek shall inherit the earth and they shall be candidates of God’s kingdom too. Gentleness and meekness are used interchangeably in the Bible. The difference between the two is that gentleness talks about attitudes, which is your state of mind. Only the meek can produce the fruit of gentleness.
Being meek does not mean you are weak. Jesus set the example on earth. He is divine and all powerful, but He was simple and approachable. He was kind, loving and compassionate. He said in Matt. 11:29 that you should take His yoke upon you and learn of Him because He is meek and lowly in heart.
God will only use those who are meek. He will not use the proud and those who are not approachable or those who do not have love and compassion towards their fellow men. Are you meek or proud just because you are opportune to be in a position of authority? Are you approachable or your presence intimidates your subordinates?
Change your ways today and be like Jesus, who stooped to the level of washing His disciples’ feet. God will only use a broken vessel and not a proud person.

Hymn: Gentle Jesus, meek and mild
- Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon a little child,
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee. - Fain I would to Thee be brought;
Gracious Lord, forbid it not;
In the kingdom of Thy grace
Give a little child a place. - Fain I would be as Thou art;
Give me Thy obedient heart;
Thou art pitiful and kind;
Let me have Thy loving mind. - Let me above all fulfil
God my heavenly Father’s will;
Never His good Spirit grieve,
Only to His glory live. - Lamb of God, I look to Thee:
Thou shalt my example be:
Thou art gentle, meek, and mild:
Thou wast once a little child. - Thou didst live to God alone;
Thou didst never seek Thine own;
Thou Thy self didst never please:
God was all Thy happiness.
