TOPIC:  Time to Rest

Though we’ll each have a role to play in God’s kingdom, the Lord ultimately wants us to rest in the righteousness He secured for us.

Some days it’s as if we’re walking perfectly in sync with the Lord. And other days we can’t seem to find Him anywhere. Though many of us try to control this ebb and flow of feeling near to Him, the pattern is likely to continue this side of heaven. That’s why we need to take Jesus’ invitation seriously: “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Participating in the process of our sanctification—through obedience to God—is a good thing, but we need to recognize rest is also a critical part of the process. Notice that God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:1-3) and that Jesus paused throughout His ministry (Luke 5:16). When we choose to cease labor and all striving, we show trust in the all-sufficient work Jesus did on the cross. We’re also demonstrating confidence in His sovereign control over our lives. Though it might feel countercultural, resting actually brings God glory.

Think about it

• What about your relationship with the Lord worries or stresses you? Consider setting it aside today to simply enjoy the righteousness Jesus secured for you.
