TEXT:  Acts 2:1-4 (KJV)
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

KEY VERSE

Fire is an enormously powerful force. It destroys, creates, heals, energises, preserves, generates, empowers, hardens, softens, purifies, penetrates, protects and illuminates. If natural fire can accomplish all these, how much more is the fire that comes directly from the altar of God? This refers to the fire of the Holy Spirit, which enables believers in Christ to do extraordinary exploits.

Jesus promised the disciples before His ascension that they would be filled with the Holy Spirit from on high. So He told them, “Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). The disciples assembled in one location, in obedience to His instruction.

Christ fulfilled His promise with four initial manifestations: a sound from heaven, a mighty wind, cloven tongues like fire and speaking in previously unlearned tongues. The tongues of fire sat on each disciple present in the room. The experience transformed the disciples and their lives and ministries never remained the same after this unprecedented experience.

The promise of the Holy Spirit is still valid today as it was in the time of the apostles and the First Century church. We need the Holy Spirit’s power today more than ever before. Of particular importance to the Church in our dispensation is the need for the “cloven tongues”, which give the believer’s speech power, boldness, divine illumination, persuasive speech and authority.

Present-day Christians must not only know about the baptism of the Holy Spirit but also desire to experience it. But the experience is not for sinners. To obtain the power of the Spirit, you must first ask God for heart cleansing through salvation and sanctification. Then you can go ahead to ask for the experience.
