The real litmus test of the Christian is not his exploits within the confines of the church building or when he finds himself amidst other believers. Whether in the temple or outside it, Christians are to offer excellent service to the Lord at all times. God’s enduring charge is that His disciples must be the salt and the light of the world, and not of the church alone.

Thrown into a dungeon as a common criminal for rejecting a woman’s proposal to be her sin partner, Joseph maintained his probity by retaining the light and salt in him. Waking up one morning, he found two fellow prisoners without the joy and life that salt and light offer. They were filled with the sadness and darkness. He comforted them with the grace of God in him.

Joseph was in the same dreary condition as the two men. He too could look mournful. But he was not. What was responsible for his cheerful outlook? His connection to God gave him the salt and light Jesus spoke of. The believer must be salt and light to a hurting and dark world by preaching the love of Christ and living like Him.

When we are the salt and light of the world, we do not become part of the throng complaining bitterly about the socioeconomic and political conditions around us. We do not allow them to drag us low to the point of carrying placards in the streets to castigate the government of the day. Instead, like Joseph, we reveal the joy of salvation in us and show them the power of the God who can turn things around for their good.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Without Christ, the world is a deep pit of darkness and bitterness.
