The New York City executive search firm of C. Stewart Baeder Associates conducted a survey of its clients, asking what qualities they most look for in their top executives. The results were surprising; they did not look first for an MBA, for a certain personality type or even a lengthy list of high-profile experience. The most desired quality was self-discipline (89%) followed by general administrative skills (82%) and an aptitude for human relations (70%).
Our tongue plays a vital role in our success, fruitfulness, resourcefulness, relationship, life and death. A close look at the life of those who have fallen short of their potential depicts a common root – nagging, a lack of self-discipline in the use of the tongue.
Why do we find that surprising? Subconsciously, we believe that successful people are somehow more fortunate, more naturally gifted, or simply better connected than we are. When we look at people who have achieved greatness in many areas of life, we will find that one common denominator is their character trait of discipline.
Courage and good conduct, which produce clear conscience and a wholesome lifestyle, should be our standard. We should not allow temporal adversity to conquer our inner-man. Being teachable and apt to learn will pave way for prudence in our endeavours. A gifted man that uses his gift wisely will, without doubt, be lifted up before men.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A prudent tongue is a mine of precious resources.
