The attempt to take God out of the picture of the world gained strength when science was misconstrued as contradicting the Bible. One major reference point is the theory of evolution. Evolution suggests that the universe and all the things in it came into existence by random chemical reaction and have evolved over millions and even billions of years.
Evolutionary scientists tell us that, over time, unintelligent matter organised itself by chance and evolved into highly complex beings like animals and human beings. The Genesis account of the origins of all things is the Creator’s own historic narrative of how it all happened. Inspired, Moses had the privilege of recording these events. In it, we can see clearly that the universe and its content are products of God’s creative act.

Today’s text explains what happened on day six of creation – the creation of land animals. The previous day, animals that live in the sea and those that fly in the sky were created. Undoubtedly, the universe and everything in it were conceived, created and controlled by an intelligent and all-powerful being – God. Therefore, “…let all the world’s inhabitants stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done…” (Psalm 33:8,9). Observe also that He spoke these things into existence.
God’s word is ever-creative. Unlike evolution which relies on a pre-existent matter, God created these things out of nothing. The believer’s faith in God’s word should never diminish in the face of atheistic philosophies and pseudo-science that have been popularly embraced today because they suit the fallen nature of man. Any Christian who doubts the Genesis account has invariably denied the veracity of every other part of Scripture because all of Scripture proclaims God’s limitless power.
