A popular saying in many societies is that “blood is thicker than water”. The expression is often used to describe the degree of strength of a family relationship. However, it is also used to show aversion to spilling of blood. Whichever way, blood is significant to men and to God.

In the passage of today, we see God’s instruction to Moses concerning atonement of sins. After the death of Nadab and Abihu, two sons of Aaron who died for offering strange fire before the Lord, God gave instructions regarding how to approach Him. Aaron was to come into the holy place with a young bullock for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

He was also to deck himself with a specified, custom-made holy garment after properly washing himself. He must also atone for the sins of Israel with two kids of the goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. There was also a pattern for presenting the goats at the tabernacle and offering them as sacrifice.

The goats were meant to atone for the sins of the children of Israel. The blood of the bullock and goat would be sprinkled upon the sacrifice for the sins of the people for whom he atoned.

These were done in the Old Testament. They have been replaced by the sacrifice of Jesus who atoned for our sins once and for all on the cross. We do not need to sacrifice animal blood any more because what Jesus did on the cross is sufficient: His blood cleanses us from all sin. We approach God through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. The only role you have to play is to repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and He will accept you unto Himself and into the Kingdom.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Jesus’ sacrifice at Calvary is sufficient for all ages.
