Topic: The Dead Cannot Praise God

TEXT: Psalm 115:12-18

1. Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

2. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.

3. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised.

4. The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.

5. Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,

6. Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

7. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

8. That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

9. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

Key Verse: Psalm 115:17
“The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.”

DCLM Daily Manna 2 December 2021 Outline

The greatest service a creature can render unto his Creator is continual sacrifices of praise. God inhabits the praises of saints. It is the understanding of this truth that made Fanny Crosby, in 1869, to write the wonderful song: “Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!”

Our text centres on the need for believers to reflect on God’s goodness. The psalmist calls for the people of God to continually trust, bless and praise Him for His mercies and compassion which faileth not. Idols, which are a creation of men have eyes, but cannot see; they have ears, but they cannot hear; they have mouths but cannot talk. They have legs and hands but they cannot move or work with them. Those idols are dead creatures and their worshippers are dead spiritually.

The dead cannot praise God. This includes the spiritually dead – sinners and backsliders. We know that the text refers to spiritual death because the saints will continue to praise God even in heaven after death as affirmed in the last verse of the chapter. They will never go down into silence as they will be presenting God with sacrifices of praise even in heaven forever. This is the main work of angels in the court of heaven.

Sinners and backsliders cannot praise God as sin has silenced them. God will never accept their praises; they are abomination to Him. He can only listen to their prayer of repentance. They should therefore run to the cross for spiritual cleansing so that their praises can be acceptable unto God. Believers should, therefore, consecrate their lives to the praises of God.
