The background to this psalm could be that reported in 1 Samuel chapter 24. King Saul had been looking for any opportunity to kill David. At one time, he assembled the best three thousand men from his army to pursue David. Meanwhile, David and his men were hiding in a cave. When Saul needed to relieve himself, he went into the particular part of the cave where David was hiding. David could have killed Saul if he wanted, but he refused to do so because Saul was “the Lord’s anointed” (1 Samuel 24:10).
The entire incident provided David with another opportunity to praise God. He could use every instrument at his disposal, and every time of the day or night (verse 8). He could praise God among his own people, and even in the international community (verse 9). He acknowledged that God’s mercy and truth are infinite, and therefore God should be exalted above all the heavens and all the earth (verses 10-11). Let us learn from the Psalmist to praise God at all times, in all places and with all our heart, strength and available resources.
PRAYER: I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples.
